If you've always wanted to try this exciting sport, but didn't know how to get started, look no further! Designed for the adventurous beginner / intermediate, this all day course provides an introduction to outdoor climbing. We’ll cover the basics: knot tying, belaying, general equipment use, and basic climbing techniques. We'll venture out 30 min east to the "Burney Limestone", a hidden gem of great climbing! While this course is focused on the beginner, the intermediate climbers will still learn valuable techniques to help you climb smarter and safer! Trip includes instruction by AMGA SPI Certified Guide and all climbing gear necessary. Minimum age is 12.

The Approach

The initial trek up to the rock will consist of a fairly strenuous hike of about 1/4 mi. Plan to wear appropriate hiking shoes and hiking pants as the approach is rife with poison oak. You are encouraged to bring your own climbing harness and shoes if you have them, but all can be provided if the respective questions are answered during the booking process.

What to bring

  • food and snacks for the day

  • minimum of 3L of water per person

  • sunscreen, sunglasses

  • light jacket

  • dress in activewear and hiking shoes

  • backpack with zipper enclosure to protect keys, phone etc (otherwise, you can and will lose items through the boulders)

Take Note

  • There is NO BATHROOM at the Shredding.

  • We practice the essentials of Leave No Trace. Be prepared to pack out what you pack in.

  • Cell phone reception varies by provider and location

  • Leave valuables at home

Where to Meet

We will gather at the parking lot of From the Hearth (1292 College View Drive, Redding, CA 96003) and will caravan to the Shredding. Roundtrip distance is roughly 50 mi. Parking is on the shoulder of CA-299. Do not leave valuables in vehicles.
